Artist’s Statement
I am always observing, asking questions and taking notes in the form of drawing. I watch people, plants, and cities grow; relationships change, new shoots form, buildings come up and down. I study this growth and decay in my surroundings and imagine the stories, emotions and biological functions that drive these changes underneath and from the inside.
I am more interested in questions than answers. The questions I ask most are, “What if?” and “How?” For example, What if we could see inside ourselves? Or, What if humans had evolved differently, with a beak instead of a mouth?
Each drawing, painting or cut-out is a question, sometimes personal and sometimes a broader reflection on civilization, culture and myth. My work is of my imagination, history and autobiography.
I work in different mediums and sizes at once. Moving between these different kinds of drawing keeps my ideas fresh. My paintings in oil tend to be large, while my drawings and collages are mostly smaller. I work quickly and on several pieces at once. Characters—old men, birds, pyramids—are recurring symbols in my work and often form loose narrative series.
In the creation of my art is a conversation with those things beyond myself and my understanding.
